Theory
Music Theory is what underpins all music – it explains how music works – how melodies and rhythms are created and how harmonies are constructed.
Learning theory aids in understanding music which can make it easier to read and play, and also allows better appreciation of it. It also, very importantly, enables people to write music themselves and convey this music to others in musical notation.
Music theory can be studied through Grade exams in the same way as practical playing. There is also a vast wealth of free (and paid for) teaching of music theory on the internet. Here are some theory books I recommend along with some links to the exam boards theory page and a website on theory:
First Steps in Music Theory – Eric Taylor (ABRSM)
Discovering Music Theory, The ABRSM Workbook
Theory of Music Workbook (Trinity)
Music Theory is Fun – Maureen Cox (For Children)
Popular Music Theory (Rock School)
